How to Choose the Right PPE

It’s pretty obvious why Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is so darn important to wear. Still, there are still some workers who are not that keen to wear protective gear.

The ‘nothing has happened to me, I’m completely safe’ mindset of these people may just cost them their life!

Statistics reveal that industrial workers are reluctant to wear PPE because it is either uncomfortable, do not fit or they have not received training.

You as conscientious employers must provide your hardworking employees with the ideal protective gear.

So, the million dollar question is, what should you consider before choosing PPE?

1. Never fully depend on PPE

This may come as a shock to some, but personal protective equipment shouldn’t be fully depended on against danger!

What this really means is that PPE has no use if all other safety procedures are not followed. Safety gear is just an additional defense mechanism on top of set safety measures.

A protective hard hat or reflective clothing can only do so much so make sure the environment or work site is safe in the first place!

2. Understand the environment

You’re the employer. You should know exactly what your workers are up against. If you don’t, then you’re risking precious lives. Conducting a hazard or risk assessment of the worksite can help you decide.

List down all the potential risks, even the unexpected ones! In an environment with hazards at every corner, it’s best to be overly prepared for ultimate safety.

Consider electrical hazards, heat and wet terrain to be 100% sure of the risks. Remember, the best defense is offense!

3. Match the hazard with PPE

Once you’ve acknowledged the main safety issues present at the work site, it’s time to choose your gear. But don’t just choose willy-nilly.

Take some time to think about what level of protection you really need.

  • What will workers be exposed to?
  • Will workers be exposed to different risks at different times?
  • How long will workers be exposed to it?
  • What is the severity of possible exposure?

Analysing the answers will help you know the right type of gear you need, by linking potential hazards with safety equipment that can prevent it.

4. Maintain compliance

Now that you know exactly what you need, here are some practical points you should note down too.

Make sure it fits properly! Your workers will be discouraged when they are given oversized or tight-fitting gear such as a hard hat or gloves.

Train your workers! It may sound simple enough but never take the benefit of the doubt. Make sure your workers know how, when and where to wear the gear.

It’s also crucial that your workers know how to maintain and store their PPE. They should be cleaned before and after use, removed and stored safely. Never underestimate the little things when it comes to safety.
